Providence Canyon

Ryan and I went to Providence Canyon. I knew nothing about the place. We were blown away. We grabbed a map from the abandoned interpretive center. The map proved to be pretty confusing. The trail was blazed well with red paint on the loblolly pines. We hiked the 7 mile loop. We found the canyon floor trails after an exhausting canyon rim hike. The canyon floor trails were not marked on the map.

Karina raised a good question about the site. "What message are people taking away from the site when they leave?" Im fascinated with Providence and the mythology that surrounds the place. How should we look at Providence? A cautionary tale or a beautiful state park? Maybe Both. Bill would say Both because he's really into seeing everything as a duality. AndI think I tend to look at the world now through the lens of Bill's duality philosophy.  Julie said maybe Providence is like a poem. It depends on who is looking at it and the meaning of the place is defined by the person looking at it. I think Julie is right! It reminds me of Readers Response Theory-meaning exist in the mind, not in the text. Maybe even Maxine Greene experiential learning or aesthetic education philosophy stuff. Like interpreting providence canyon as a piece of Art. Ive never seen Bob Ross paint a canyon before. I really want to paint a portrait of Providence.

What is Providence preserving? What arguments are the people of Stewart County making about the past with this site? Who is controlling the argument? Why is the place so unheard of? I got this book called Let Us Now Praise Famous Gullies: Providence Canyon and the Soils of the South.
